West Coast

Cruising the cracked streets and numbered avenues of Surrey/Vancouver, laid out like Sim City on pause, in a lowered S-10, Suicidal Tendencies and Chili Peppers, summer wind so you could smell the ocean, not the sulfur mill. 1992 it was.

Randomly loaded Suicidal into the mp3 just now and that’s what came to mind. Thanks California for all those great neo-punk-surfskater-
metal-funk-hiphop fusion bands.

You're welcome!

Even though I'm physically in the Republic of Texas at the moment...

Texas: SRV, ZZ Top, Fabulous Thunderbirds, Texas Jewboys, Butthole Surfers(I think) and possibly Primus - exo?

Bob Schneider, Dexter Freebish (I think...) and I don't know who else. But I love the Butthole Surfer's "Pepper."

"They were doing it in Texas."

we can also thank canada for Alanis Morriset, Celine Deion, Anne Marie....

hmmm...

for everything we (california) has done, you'd think we'd be getting a little more back...

Does Canada still set a quota of how much "Canadian" music must be played on air during the week? Of course Alanis, Bare Naked, Tragic, and maybe even Blue Rodeo don't count - too American. Brian Adams counts only because the States had enough of that fucking Robin Hood song.

don't forget Vanilla Ice. The kind of guy you just want to punch in the face on principle.

H. Wood when I worked in radio in the eighties it was 10% Can-con on AM and 20 or 30% on FM. But writers and producers and hairdressers counted if they were canadian, so you could play other stuff as long as a canuck had breatherd on it somewhere. Besides, nobody checks that shit.

that sounded pretentious "when I worked in radio" - I worked part-time at two AM stations for a couple years, and did a little voice-over work for the Real-Estate Channel.

Oh, Selena was also from Texas. I learned that today.

Clearly my time here has not been completely wasted. Though I have been, every night!
